Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also included leaders in various fields.
