Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters
It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
