McLaren Blames Rival Drivers for Norris-Piastri Incident
One tire comes loose from the car of Norris after he crashed into team-mate Piastri at the opening of the US GP sprint race.
McLaren Formula 1 leaders Brown and Stella blamed competitors for the incident between Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.
Piastri, leading Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, crashed into his team-mate after hitting Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
The incident forced out both McLaren drivers from the race, along with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.
Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Incident
Zak Brown, the team's CEO, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "unprofessional", adding: "Clearly Nico drove into Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella added: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we were denied the chance to race."
"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with necessary care. Go to the first corner, make sure you avoid harming other drivers and carry on."
The team clarified that the team principal was mentioning both Hulkenberg and Alonso.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
However, former champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the risks of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he chose to cut back to try to overtake Norris.
The Australian had a better start than Norris and at first competed on the outer side on the uphill approach to the corner.
But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the way out, only to collide with Hulkenberg.
Driver Reactions After the Incident
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I tried to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Norris. A shame."
Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more people behind just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some cars came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."
The Sauber driver, who had earned a best qualifying fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the bin. Just messy."
"Piastri steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and way out of Turn One but I can't just disappear."
"I had Fernando attack on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri turned in and the collision was inevitable."
Aftermath and Team Response
McLaren will analyze the crash with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on Saturday.
The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we accept it, we are now focusing on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a competitive place from our performance point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."
"The points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more care would be good for all involved."
Standings Impact
The sprint event was won by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 behind of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The implication is what the numbers says - we lost eight championship points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two skilled drivers. We anticipate just some standard competition."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
