The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Squad

England have chosen a 12-man selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.

Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.

During these matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.

However McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
